Test your level of English

صورة
Before placing you in a class we ask you to complete our online English language placement test. The test opens in a new window, is multiple choice, has 40 questions and should take around 20 minutes.  Test your level About the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages At IH London, we base our classing on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to differentiate levels of ability for the English language.  To ensure that you are placed in a class with other students of a similar English ability, we sub-divide the CEFR levels. Our experience is that students learn more quickly and more efficiently if placed in a class with other students of  a similar English level; no one is left behind and no one is held back.

What to think about before you start writing an IELTS essay

What do you need to think about before you start writing an IELTS essay? The answer will depend on you slightly and the essay question a bit, but here are some things for you to consider. Points to note are there are several different things here – “planning” is not a simple thing you’ll need time to do all of this a lot of these points involve thinking – the best thinking often takes a little time if you don’t do any of these things before you write – then you’ll need to do them as you write. That’s normally much harder and often takes longer General strategy Know what you are going to think about before you start writing and know how long you’ll spend on it. The time you use here you’ll save later by not needing to stop and think so much as you write. Understand the question The first thing that everyone – absolutely everyone – should do is spend time reading  and understanding  the question.A lot of essays go wrong because they either fail to answer all t

Academic word list

In this section you can do practice tests for all groups of the academic word list. The Academic Word List (AWL) was developed by Averil Coxhead at the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. The list contains 570 word families which were selected because they appear with great frequency in a broad range of academic texts. The list does not include words that are in the most frequent 2000 words of English (the General Service List), thus making it specific to academic contexts. The AWL was primarily made so that it could be used by teachers as part of a programme preparing learners for tertiary level study or used by students working alone to learn the words most needed to study at colleges and universities. The 570 words are divided into 10 Groups. The Groups are ordered such that the words in the first Group are the most frequent words and those in the last Group are the least frequent.
